So last night marked the worst day of my life as a parent to date so far. I know that there will be many more and for the first horrible immediate care visit, i think 6.5 mos. is not doing so bad. Joel and I noticed that Kenxie had a slight skin irritation or diaper rash on Sunday morning but didn't really think too much of it. She did have some diarrhea though and to make sure that there was no poop stuck anywhere i gave her a morning bath. I didn't want to wipe her and irritate her even more. After her bath she seemed to be doing fine. She took her regular morning nap before we left and was in great spirits at church. She was standing and playing and talking and having a great time. She had eaten breakfast and then had a bottle while in the nursery. So took another nap in nursery which wasn't too odd and when she woke up i noticed that one cheek was a little red. Nothing odd again because she had slept on that cheek. A little while after she woke up she was sitting on my lap and just seemed very :::blah:::. She wasn't playing or smiling just very complacent. I then noticed that her other cheek was red and decided to take her temperature. On a whim i took out the thermometer and popped it into her baby bum and WAM. 102.0. I grabbed her up and gave her some Tylenol immediately. Luckily church got out at that very same moment and Joel walked in. I told him in a panic that we needed to go and NOW. We rushed home and took her temp again and it was 101.7 so not very improved. Joel's mom came over and coked us lunch and i put Kenzie down for a nap to see if the Tylenol would work it's magic. About an hour later she woke up a little so i grabbed her out of bed and she was at 101.1. We were holding her and she was just barely waking up at all. Very lethargic and fussy when she was awake. So i called our 24 hr nurse line that our insurance provides and they said to go ahead and bring her to a doctor. We went to the immediate care clinic with her and got her checked out and they gave her some Motrin right away. Then the hell started. They didn't see any obvious signs of an ear infection or anything else so they had to draw blood and get a urine sample. I knew this would be bad. They tried to draw blood once from her arm while i was in the room with Kenzie but couldn't find her vein and i was already balling me eyes out to see Kenzie in pain. Then i had to leave the room and Joel stayed with her to helpcalm her and hold her down, They tried Kenzie's other arm i guess and still couldn't find anything, all the while my sweet baby girl was SCREAMING. Then i guess they tried the first arm again still to no avail. By this time i walked in and grabbed Kenzie and said ok let's take a break and let Kenzie cool off and calm down. She was in such a fit that her whole body was red, and with her high fever already i didn't want her getting worse. So after a few mins they decided to go ahead and do the catheter and try to get urine so they could test that. So again, more screaming and crying, more beat red baby and more bawling mommy. I cried likek i have not cried in a long long time. You can't even begin to understand the pain in your heart knowing that your baby is in so much pain and there is nothing that you can do about it. You can't explain that it needs to be done to get her better. You can't hold her hand and tell her to just breathe through it. All you can do is let it get done and then hold her like there is no tomorrow. After the catheter i said enough and they ran the urine to see if there was anything there. While they were doing that Kenzie fell asleep on my chest and got about a 30 min. nap. THANK GOD! I was praying so hard that she had a UTI just to avoid more attempts at blood drawing. A few mins later they came back saying her urine was infected....woohoo!! So then they had to poke her one more time and gave her an antibiotic shot. We had to wait around for 15 mins or so to make sure that she had no reaction tot he meds, got a script, and then headed home. We all got ice cream on the way home and i had a MooLatte. Kenzie got to lick the whipped cream off the top. :) She was feeling so much better after the ordeal and i was thrilled. She is now her perfect self and after a morning followup with her doctor she is on an antibiotic med for a week 2x a day and motrin if the fever returns. She got a little pink bandaid on her leg from the shot...it's so cute. Her poor arms have 3 little bruises on them though. :( My heart hurt for her but i knew it had to be done. Luckily it's all over now and the meds should take care of the UTI entirely. My instincts were right from first thing that morning. When i first saw the red skin around her girly 'peepee' i though hmm....UTI maybe? Anyways...she's playing happily on the floor now and Joel and I both took the day off work to be with her and make sure she stayed ok. Well now i'm starting to fight either a cold or some serious allergies so i think we'll go take a nap now. Signing out!
